Satellite Centres

The success of the KISS model in Bhubaneswar in terms of sustainability and impact has made the management embark on the plan of developing satellite centres in the same model in different districts of Odisha to provide an access to formal education to those at the margins close to their homes. KISS Delhi School is a public service oriented, non-profit entity, established by a joint venture between government of NCT of Delhi and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Odisha being headed by CEO, KISS Delhi. The KISS model of education – fully free formal education in a residential environment has been accepted by one and all not only from India but from abroad as the most successful model to eradicate poverty through education in underprivileged children. KISS, the brainchild of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, who has experienced poverty first hand after he lost his father at the tender age of 4 years realized that poverty is the biggest handicap a child can have. Dr. Achyuta Samanta, having experienced poverty himself, set a mission for his life to provide underprivileged children a level playing field in the form of a fully free residential school, and thus KISS was born in 1993 in Bhubaneswar with 125 tribal children. Today KISS is the largest free residential tribal institute in the world. KISS Delhi is another step outside Odisha towards achieving Dr. Achyuta Samanta’s vision.

In December 2010, Smt. Sheila Dixit, the then Chief Minister of Delhi, visited Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, along with her team. The model of KISS impressed her, and she was curious to know more about it. She met Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the founder of KISS, and asked him about the workings of the institution. Smt. Dixit was moved by the dedication of Dr. Samanta and his team towards the education and welfare of the underprivileged sections of society. When she asked Dr. Samanta about his wish-list, he humbly replied, “I am a lifelong bachelor. I don’t want anything.” He expressed his desire to start a KISS branch in Delhi if he was provided with land, infrastructure, and recurring expenses. He said that he didn’t need anything for himself, but he wanted to ensure that KISS could continue to help the needy children in Delhi. This statement from Dr. Samanta impressed Smt. Dixit even more, as it showed his genuine passion and commitment towards the cause of providing education to underprivileged children. She realized that KISS was not just another educational institution, but a social movement that was making a real difference in the lives of thousands of children. Smt. Dixit was deeply touched by Dr. Samanta’s selfless attitude and commitment to social causes. She decided to grant his wish of starting a free residential school in Delhi for the underprivileged sections of society. She provided him with the necessary land and infrastructure for KISS Delhi to function. KISS Delhi started functioning since 2013. The institution continues to provide free education, food, clothing, and healthcare facilities to underprivileged children in Delhi, helping them break the cycle of poverty and providing them with a brighter future.

Global Footprint

Over the years, KISS has become a beacon of hope for thousands of children who come from marginalized communities and face numerous socio-economic challenges. The institution provides them with not just education, but also food, clothing, and healthcare facilities, ensuring that they have a nurturing environment to grow and learn.
One of the most remarkable aspects of KISS is its global footprint. The institution has not only transformed the lives of children in India but has also inspired many others across the world. For instance, Dr. Sabur Khan, the founder of Daffodil International University in Bangladesh, visited KISS and was deeply impressed by Dr. Samanta’s work and dedication. He extended an invitation to Dr. Samanta to help establish a similar institution in Bangladesh, called the Daffodil Institute of Social Sciences(DISS). KISS shall provide technical expertise, while Daffodil International University will take care of all the finances and operations. Daffodil Institute of Social Sciences would be transforming the lives of underprivileged children in Dhaka, just like KISS has been doing in Bhubaneswar. Another branch of KISS is coming up in Jessore in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal to provide free education to underprivileged children. Dr. Achyuta Samanta’s vision and dedication towards social causes have inspired many others to follow in his footsteps and work towards creating a better world for all.
