Rajani lights the lamp of life !

“ Her mother’s joy knew no bounds as she never thought her shy and introvert daughter could be so vocal that to in front of elders. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she hugged her and exclaimed in ecstasy”

Rajni’s Mother in parents meeting at KISS

Rajani Dungdungorign, a girl from a community “Khadia” belongs to Gurudia village of Sundergarh District. She is now in class VI at KISS. She hails from a poor family as the parents work on daily wage to manage both ends meet. It is indeed a herculean task for them to take care of a large family of eight members. . Among six siblings there are four girls and two boys. The elder daughter is already married; she has undergone nursing training after 12th grade. Her husband too works as a daily laborer. She had to marry under family pressure as she was not able to get a suitable job and the parents were in a hurry as they had to manage four daughters.

Her sister was in great pain after giving birth to the first child. She could not afford proper nutrition and care during pregnancy as the husband earnings were not adequate enough to meet bare necessities of life. She had to live in a small hut on the outskirts of Sundargarh town amidst dirty surroundings. Burdened with such existential trauma, she even could not care for basic tenets of healthy living and hygiene. Already an underweight at birth, the child was exposed to recurrent morbidity and infections. She was too helpless and undone in the face of hardships.

During her last visit to home, Rajni once visited her along with parents whom her sister had called for help. She could not believe that such a promising and bright girl could be reduced to a frail skeleton. It was not difficult to understand the cruel turn of events which threatened to kill both the mother and baby.  Rajni could promptly find what she could do the best. She explained to her sister about the importance of basic hygiene. She also cited examples from her own experience and the benefits of applying life skills to overcome problems which are more behavioural rather economic.

“My daughter would become a Doctor!”

Rajni’s eloquence and depth surprised everyone. Her mother’s joy knew no bounds as she never thought her shy and introvert daughter could be so vocal that to in front of elders. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she hugged her and exclaimed in ecstasy”My daughter would become a Doctor!”  One could see a flash of smile in everybody’s face nodding their head in affirmation. The baby too woke us and giggled as if it too was a part of this great wish. Rajni sent the parents back as she decided to nurse back her sister back to health during rest of the vacation. Her efforts paid dividends as the family learnt and practiced essential norms of preventive health care and hygiene.

Rajni’s transformation and success, in a sense, projects the innovation, creativity and self development nurtured by KISS among all its members. In the recent parents meet when we spoke to the parents, they showered blessings on the founder mentor and Team KISS for making such a transformational contribution to the life a dreams of hapless tribal children. Our Rajni is second to none and she will make us more proud through her achievements and deeds as she lights the lamp of life quipped his proud father!
