The Prospect of Sustainable Tourism in Highland Oisha by Jitu Mishra

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a dramatic impact on the world of work, but the impact differs greatly from sector to sector. And the massive/hardest-hit sectors include is the civil aviation, tourism and the cultural sectors. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism was constituted one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing economic sectors in the world. The importance of that sector as a driver for job creation and the promotion of local economic development, culture, and products, which has been reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 8, 12, and 14. But the pandemic has put a pause to everything.

However the webinar discussion on sustainable tourism shows us a path to recreate the job opportunities for local peoples. The present discussion provides not only the direction for the sustainable tourism planning & development but also to make recommendations for a revival of the tourism industry in a sustainable manner in the post-COVID-19 era.

Major Learning from this Discussion:

The Role of Tourism in the Present Situation demands our attitude to shift from luxury to sustainable living.

What Impact it will make?

  1. Reduce the divide between urban and rural India at the psychological level – People living in urban India, who are ignorant can connect with rural India better
  2. Appreciation and providing justice to ingenuity, resourcefulness, grassroots culture, and heritage, indigenous farming, art and craft
  3. Revival of fast dying cultural institutions
  4. Sharing of knowledge and ideas across groups
  5. Generation of livelihood and stopping forced migration among the vulnerable and marginalized groups
  6. Spread of little known ideas pertaining to native food, craft, art, music and dance to larger cities with proper branding and packaging

Speaker: Jitu Mishra, an archaeologist from Pune’s Deccan College & the Co-founder of Virasat E-Hind Foundation and a well known traveler-cum-blogger who love to explore Tribal Hinterland and write the unheard stories.
