KISS Completes 20 Years of Existence
CM Inaugurates Steam-based Mechanical Kitchen and 100-bedded Dispensary
Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), which was founded in 1993 with only 125 tribal students in a rented house, has completed 20 years of its existence in 2012. Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha graced a celebration to commemorate this occasion as Chief Guest on 30th November 2012. KISS has been playing an important role in the welfare of tribals, he said, while commending Dr. Achyuta Samanta, its Founder, for the effort. It may be mentioned that at KISS more than 16,500 tribal boys and girls from all the 30 districts of Odisha are pursuing their education from Kindergarten (KG) to Postgraduate (PG) in a residential setting free of cost. In addition to formal education, the students get ample opportunities to participate in various extra-curricular activities. Further, 1,500 students of KISS are getting professional and technical education – like Engineering, Medical, Law, Management, etc., in KIIT University free of cost.
To celebrate the occasion of 20 years completion, the institute has planned various programmes scheduled to be organized in KISS campus as well as different places of Odisha over the period of one year. This celebration, which has ‘New Mind, New Dream’ as its slogan, will conclude in October 2013. By such time, student strength of KISS is expected to reach 20,000. The celebration will create state-wide awareness about education, according to KISS sources.
Shri Rabi Narayan Nanda, Hon’ble Minister of State (Ind.), School and Mass Education, Govt. of Odisha and KISS Secretary, Shri R. N. Dash also addressed the students. A 100-bedded Dispensary and Steam-based Mechanical Kitchen was also inaugurated at KISS by the Chief Minister on the occasion.
KISS Observes 80th Birth Anniversary of Late Pradyumna Bal
The 80th Birth Anniversary of Late Pradyumna Bal, Noted Parliamentarian, Journalist and Founder, President of KIIT & KISS was observed at KISS on 8th November 2012.
Mr. Rahul Dravid, former captain of Indian Cricket Team; Smt. Saswati Bal, President, KIIT & KISS; Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, Prof. P. P. Mathur, VC, KIIT University; Mr. R. N. Dash, Secretary, KISS, Dr. P. K. Routaray, CEO, KISS and Mr. P. K. Das, Director, Livelihood, KISS graced the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Dravid said, “It’s a great pleasure to see a sea of young faces, including staff members, who have got together to celebrate the occasion”. Paying rich tribute to Pradyumna Bal, Dr. A. Samanta, said that his most important message was that we should not be materialist. Helping the weaker sections of the society was his nature, said Saswati Bal.
Socialistic ideals, struggle and sacrifice of Pradyumna Bal for the people, especially for tribal, remain examples for other to emulate, said Prof. Mathur. Shri R. N. Dash said, his vision remains a guiding light for KIIT Group of Institutions and KISS. Dr. P. K. Routaray, CEO, KISS delivered the welcome address, while Dr. P. K Das proposed the vote of thanks.
Among others, Ms. Bratati Bal, Mr. Pratyush Bal, Mr. Sambit Bal, Dr. Sasmitarani Samanta, Registrar, KIIT University, Dr. Satyendra Patnaik, Rector, KIIT were present on the occasion.
KISS Student Selected for Asian Baseball Championship
Padma Charan Hansdah a 10th Class student of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has been selected in India Baseball team for participating in 7th BFA " AA" Asian Baseball Championship under 15years scheduled to be held from 5th to 11th November 2012 at Cuttack, Odisha. Padma Charan, who comes from a very poor Santal tribal family from Mayurbhanj has achieved satisfactory performances in different regional and circle level games, for which he has been selected to play international game.
Similarly, another girl Cicillia Tirkey, +2 2nd year Arts student of KISS has been selected to represent Odisha Women Hockey team in the National level PYKKA Women Sports Competition 2012-13 scheduled to be held at Gurgaon, Hariyana from 2nd to 5th November 2012.
