KISS Achieves Outstanding Success in +2 Exams

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has posted cent percent result in Science, Commerce and Arts streams for the 4th year in a row in +2 Examinations conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha. Result of the examinations was declared today. More than 95% students passed in Science, while in Arts and Commerce KISS achieved 100% result. A large number of students in KISS passed in 1st and 2nd divisions, according to the sources.

It is encouraging that 15 students from primitive tribal groups like Kharia, Saura, Juang, Kutia Kondh, Jhuria Paraja have passed in Science, Commerce and Arts streams. In what is a big morale boost for the students of this tribal institute, even those students who had fared poorly in Matric examinations have passed in first class.

It is a rare feat to educate and groom tribal students from remote areas of the State and enable them to achieve cent percent result every year, opined intellectuals.

Expressing satisfaction over the result, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS said that it has been possible only due to blessings of Lord Jagannath. He congratulated teachers, staff, headmaster and Chief Executive Officer, Principal and Director of KISS for their hard work and students for their concentration.

TCS Recruits 5 Tribal Students of KISS

Five tribal students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) have bagged job offers from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The successful students are - Ashok Kumar Muduli (BCA), Indrani Bhuye (BBA), Jayadev Patra (BBA), Manoj Murmu (BBA) and Pradip Chandra Kumura (BBA). Students were selected after a grueling recruitment process. It was the first direct recruitment through campus placement by TCS in KISS.

In the month of April, TCS trainers from Kolkata had imparted an intensive training module of 80 hours to 42 BBA and BCA students of KISS. Mr Stephan Moses Dinakaran of TCS HR visited the institute for campus placement on 18th May 2012.

As vacations have started, total 25 students participated in the recruitment process. Eighteen students were successful in the written test and qualified for the HR Round, out of which 10 students were selected for Technical round. Seven of them then qualified for the Managerial Round, resulting in final selection of five students.  The Technical and Managerial rounds were telephonic rounds.

The students will join TCS at Kolkata for Initial Learning Process in the 1st week of June. The students who missed out in the process would be given another opportunity in the next drive.

Decks Cleared for KISS Delhi Branch

Decks have been cleared for setting up of a branch of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Delhi. Cabinet of NCT of Delhi accorded approval to setting up of a residential school on the patterns of KISS at Najabgarh in Delhi on 14th May 2012. The new initiative would seek to improve the avenues of education for the SC, ST, OBC and minority community students, said Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi after the Cabinet decision. Like in KISS, education and all facilities will be provided free of cost to the students.

The residential school would be managed by KISS, which would make available its teachers to the students in Delhi to impart education in a traditional manner. The Delhi Government has provided 20 acres of land where construction of infrastructure completed since one year for the school. The Government would also provide financial assistance for running of this school.

It is learnt that Delhi Government have been requesting Dr. A. Samanta, Founder of KISS for about two years for setting up a branch of KISS in Delhi. In this connection, a team of senior officials of Delhi Government led by Smt. Sheila Dikshit had visited KISS last year to study the working of this unique model of tribal empowerment.

With 16,500 tribal students, KISS is the biggest residential tribal institute in the world that provides accommodation, food, healthcare, and education from KG to PG, vocational training and all basic amenities of life absolutely free with a job assurance after completion of education. Success of KISS as an effective model of tribal empowerment has attracted attention of many national and international agencies. Besides Delhi, a branch of KISS is already functional in Chhattisgarh. There have also been consistent requests from other State Governments like Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh to establish replicas of KISS.

Welcoming the Cabinet decision, Dr. Samanta said that the school will provide holistic quality education at par with any good public school.

Jhina Hikaka Spends 4 Hrs at KISS

Mr. Jhina Hikaka, Hon’ble MLA, Laxmipur and eminent tribal leader visited Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) and spent over four hours here on 4th May 2012. After being released from Maoist captivity, he visited Jagannath Temple in Puri and met the Chief Minister before visiting KISS. He thanked students of KISS for coming together to appeal Maoists for his release.

Mr. Hikaka is a MLA from Laxmipur constituency and a popular tribal leader. Due to his efforts, many tribal students from Laxmipur, Narayanpatna, Bandhugaon and other tribal areas in Koraput district, have been taking admission in KISS every year. He visits KISS many times in a year to interact with the tribal students.

During a discussion here with the students and staff of KISS, he informed that the tribals present at the Praja Court, organized by Maoists before his release, demanded his immediate release as he was the only person through whom their children were getting a chance to take admission in KISS. As the admission time was running out, admission of their children in KISS could be missed if Mr. Hikaka was not released, some tribals said.

The effort of KISS towards tribal empowerment was discussed in Praja Court, he informed. Thousands of tribal children study in KISS free of cost getting higher education and employment, relieving their family of this crucial responsibility, opined the tribals at the Praja Court.

The effort of KISS has reached remote forest villages. Before release of Mr. Hikaka, a team of journalists including Sampad Mahapatra of NDTV had gone to secure release of Italian national Mr. Claudio Colangelo, who was also abducted by Maoists. This journalist team also observed the impact of KISS in remote tribal areas. When they reached there, a number of tribals surrounded them and promised help to them to reach their destination on the condition that the journalists would help their children in taking admission in KISS. Sampad Mahapatra had assured them of the help.

Never Seen Institute Like KISS – Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad

“I have traveled to many places in India and abroad and come in interaction with many educational and health institutes, but I have never seen an institute like Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), where 16,500 tribal students get education and all necessities of life free of cost”, said Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. Shri Azad was on a visit to KISS on 5th May 2012 along with Shri Jagdish Tytler, Former Union Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs.

While promoters of institutions generally have rich financial background, KIIT and KISS have been established by a simple man, Dr. A. Samanta, who runs his office from under a tree, the Union Health Minister said. His achievements prove that if there is a will to serve tribal people, society and country, there is no need of money, only courage is required, he remarked. Showering lavish praise on Dr. Samanta, Shri Azad said that only 10 more individuals like him can bring about lot of positive change in the country. If he had applied his mind for his self interest, he would have been a billionaire already, he added.

Shri Azad, who is also National President of Gandhi Global Family (GGF), unveiled a statue of Gandhiji on behalf of Gandhi Global Family at KISS campus. It is not difficult for any visitor to KISS to know that individuals like Dr. Samanta are very rare in society, he said. Mahatma Gandhi sacrificed all his pleasures for the nation during struggle for freedom, he remarked, while drawing a comparison that after 64 years of independence Dr. Samanta has sacrificed all his pleasures for the society. He is a Gandhian in true sense and students of KISS should draw inspiration from him as a role model, Shri Azad added. He also proposed a Mahasammelani at KISS campus on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti this year.

Informing about National Rural Health Mission, the Union Health Minister said that Government is providing iron and folic tablets to all 13 crore school going students from age 9 to 18. The drop out girls can also get these medicines through ASHA, he informed.

Welcoming the guests to KISS campus, Dr. Samanta said that the country is fortunate to have a leader like Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is a true follower of Gandhiji.

Among others, Dr. P. K. Patasani, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Bhubaneswar and Dr. P. K. Routray, CEO, KISS were present.
