KISS an Eye Opener for All: Rajiv Pratap Rudy

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS Bhubaneswar) is an eye opener for all said, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India. Shri Rudy visited KISSon Friday. After visiting various departments and units of KISS he interacted with 25,000 tribal students. Expressing his happiness after visiting KISS, he said, we all including politicians, social workers, industrialists, entrepreneurs should learn from Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the Founder of KISS. It is really eye opener for all, how a simple man single handedly has made a huge organization and giving free education including healthcare facility, accommodation to thousands of poor tribal students. Dr. Samanta is a role model for all. I am humbled after seeing KISS.  I have visited many places and institutions, but they seem not as insignificant as this institution which is indeed massive work. This is the most spectacular educational initiative for the tribal poor. Such selfless service by an individual is unimaginable. I am sure about it that, Narendra modi, our beloved Prime Minister of India will also come here. I will extend all the support to KISS for its initiative to skill India and make in India from my ministry, he added. 

KIIT Celebrates 67th Republic Day

The 67th Republic Day was celebrated in KIIT University and KISS with patriotic fervor. On the occasion, Smt. Saswati Bal, President, KIIT & KISS hoisted the National Flag and took salute of the parade as Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, she said, students should work towards nation building and all should think about betterment of our country.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS said, everybody should be aware of his/her duties towards motherland. He advised students to do something positive for the nation, apart from their study. Among others, Shri R. N. Dash, Secretary; Prof. P. P. Mathur, VC, KIIT University, Dr. Sasmita Samanta, Registrar; Prof. Abdyldaev Kurmanbek, Rector, ISU, Kyrgyz Republic; Ms. Omuralieva Damira, Rector, NSU, Kyrgyz Republic; Student delegates from Hanseo University, South Korea and officials & students of KIIT & KISS were present. 

On this occasion, best staff awards of KIIT Group of Institutions for the year 2015 were also given away. Students of various schools of KIIT Group of Institutions and KISS performed cultural programmes.

U.S. Ambassador in KISS
I have never seen an institute like KISS: Ambassador Verma

His Excellency the U.S. Ambassador to India Mr. Richard R. Verma visited Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) on January 22, 2016 and interacted with 25,000 tribal students of the institute. “It is amazing to see 25,000 children at one place. I have visited more than 70 countries, but I have never seen an institute like KISS”, he said in his address to the students.  

“My parents and grandparents were from India. My father and my mother were teacher. My grandmother was also a teacher. However, my grandfather did not get scope for education”, Ambassador Verma said, emphasizing his Indian roots. Condition of India at that time was bad, but now the country is emerging as a global power, he observed.

“I am standing before you as US Ambassador due to my parent’s hard work and the education that I received”, he stated. Education is the most important factor that opens floodgates of opportunities, he said, while telling the students to be proud of the education they are getting at KISS. Many children of the world do not have opportunity for education, he said, adding that Founder of KIIT & KISS, Dr. Achyuta Samanta has been doing a tremendous work for education through the two institutes, he added.

“You are the future mirror of India as well as the world. I am looking forward to see our young Indians to lead the country and world”, he told the students. Ambassador Verma also inaugurated the English Access Micro-scholarship Program of the U.S. Government and distributed certificates to 16 students from the new Access class.

In his welcome address, Dr. Samanta informed that two U.S. Ambassador to India have visited KISS before Ambassador Verma. However, visit of Ambassador Verma is very special because of his Indian roots, he added.

Among others, officials from U.S. Consulate Hyderabad Mr. Michael Mullins, Consul General; Mr. Gabriel Hons-Olivier, Public Affairs Officer; Mr. Peter McSharry, Political and Economic Officer; Mr. Salil Kader, Cultural Affairs Advisor and Mr. Bradley Horn, Regional English Language Officer, U.S. Embassy, New Delhi accompanied Ambassador Richard R. Verma. 

KISS Students in ‘Banega Swachha India’ Campaign

Aiming to get students community and common people to join the clean-up drives across India throughout the year, 25000 students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) were assembled to make largest Human Sentence on ‘Banega Swachha India’ in KISS Campus on Sunday. As a part of the campaign students clean up nearby slum, villages, medical and roads during the occasion. Encouraging students Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS said, students of KISS are engaged themselves two hours every Sunday, which is a regular habit of the students since so many years. Besides, students and staff of KISS and KISS also involve themselves in cleaning campaign during Gandhi Jayanti and other important occasions.

World Food Programme Executive Director Visits KISS

Her Excellency Ms. Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director, World Food Programme visited Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) on January 13, 2016. Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS had requested her to visit the institution six months back. Her visit was in response to the invitation.

She went around various departments and units of KISS and interacted with 25,000 tribal students. “You are the future of India as well as the world. Dr. Samanta has given you a tremendous platform to dream. KISS is the right platform to fulfill your dreams”, she told the students.

“We can achieve hunger-free, poverty free, peaceful and prosperous world with your support. You can achieve a hunger free and poverty free India by fulfilling your dreams. Peace can be achieved all over the world if we can make it poverty free and hunger free”, Ms. Cousin said. Expressing satisfaction over the success of students of KISS in various fields, she told them that they are now the member of UN family.

Among others, important dignitaries including Mr. Manoj Juneja, Assistant Executive Director, WFP; Mr. David Kaatrud, Regional Director for Asia; Dr. Hameed Nuru, Representative & Country Director, WFP India; and Mr. Jan Delbaere, Deputy Country Director accompanied Ms. Cousin. Renowned social worker Padmashree Jokin Arputham; Dr. David Satterthwaite, Nobel Peace Prize, 2007, IPCC Team, Senior Fellow, International Institute for Environment and Development; and Prof. Dave Harris, Dean, Herberger Business School, St. Cloud State University, USA also visited KISS.

Workshop on Autocad for KISS students

A two-day workshop on Autocad Software was conducted for KISS students studying in +2 Science, 1st year. The special workshop, a CSR initiative of Twintech, was conducted on 17th and 18th of December 2015 with an objective to expose KISS students to Autocad and 3D design. Total 113 students participated in the workshop, out of whom 75 were girls. There was a post workshop evaluation and there were 12 best performers in theory and 3 best performers in practical. All of them were given a specially designed memento. Moreover, all the participants were awarded Autodesk Global Participation Certificate. Mementos and certificates were distributed by Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder KIIT & KISS.

Achyuta Samanta Elected as President of Indian Science Congress Association

Noted educationist, social entrepreneur and Founder of KIIT & KISS, Dr. Achyuta Samanta has been elected as President of Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). He is the President Elect for the year 2016-17 and will assume office for the year 2017-18. Dr. Samanta is only the second person from Odisha to be elected President of the prestigious science body in its 102 years history, after a gap of 55 years. On last occasion, Prof. Prana Krushna Parija, eminent Odia scientist, had officiated as President of the 47th Session of the ISCA in 1960 held in Bombay. Many eminent personalities, including former Prime Ministers Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. Manmohan Singh, have held this office in the past.

Dr. Samanta has been the member of Executive Council of ISCA since 2011. He made an example by organizing 99th Session of the Indian Science Congress in 2012, which was held in KIIT University. He has also been the member of many prestigious educational and other national level apex bodies, including UGC (2008-2014), AICTE, National Coir Board, CAPART, NCTE and members of academic councils of two Central Universities. He was the only person from Odisha to be the member of both UGC and AICTE.

Expressing happiness over his election, Dr. Samanta said, it is a good news for Odisha and he will work to highlight the state’s achievements in the fields of science and technology in India and abroad. “There is a misconception that people of other states are in the topmost positions of various apex educational bodies. Now this misconception will change as Odisha has got a chance, said Dr. Samanta, who is working for the development of country and Odisha through education and social service. It has become possible only because of God’s blessings and good wishes from the people of the State, he added.

During the 103rd Session of the Indian Science Congress in Mysuru, Dr. Samanta was the Chief Guest of National Children’s Science Congress. Former President of India Late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam used to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest for past many years.

In a related development, Prof. P. P. Mathur, VC, KIIT University has been elected as the General Secretary of ISCA for the year 2016-19. It is rare for two persons from a single University to be elected as president and secretary of ISCA, which is the oldest association of science academicians and scientists of India. It has more than 60,000 members till today. Many educationist, scientist and intellectuals congratulated Dr. Samanta for this new assignment. Establishing institute is not a big achievement, but if the fame of the institute could reach everywhere across the globe, then it is a pride for the entire country, they opined.

Dibrugarh University Confers Honorary D.Litt. on Achyuta Samanta

Dibrugarh University (DU) of Assam conferred D.Litt. Honoris Causa on eminent educationist and social entrepreneur Dr. Achyuta Samanta of Odisha in its 15th convocation held on 2nd January 2016. The Governor of Assam and Chancellor of DU, Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya presided over the convocation ceremony. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Chancellor of Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, New Delhi, Justice Mukundakam Sharma; DU Vice-Chancellor Dr Alak Kumar Buragohain, and other eminent guests were also present.

The university conferred the honorary D.Litt on Dr. Samanta in absentia, as he is in Mysuru to attend 103rd session of the Indian Science Congress. The name of Dr. Samanta for the honour was approved six months ago by the Chancellor and Governor of Assam following recommendation of Syndicate and Senate of the DU. Dr. Samanta was awarded the honorary D. Litt for his outstanding contribution in the field of education and social work. A noted litterateur, scholar of eminence and social worker of Assam was also conferred the honorary D.Litt along with Dr. Samanta.

In his welcome address, VC Dr. Buragohain said, the University is highly pleased and feels privileged to confer the Degree of D. Litt honoris causa on Dr. Samanta, who has served for the promotion of education among the poor and the downtrodden. Governor and Chancellor Shri Acharya, CM Shri Tarun Gogoi and Justice Sharma also praised Dr. Samanta for his continuous effort towards eradication of poverty through education and social work. Shri Gogoi said, conferring the honour on an eminent personality like Dr. Samanta is a matter of pride for the State of Assam. Shri Acharya thanked the VC of DU for selecting Dr. Samanta, while Chief Guest Justice Sharma appreciated the University authorities selecting Dr. Samanta.

Expressing his satisfaction, Dr. Samanta expressed gratitude to DU for the honour. Dibrugarh University, the easternmost University of India was set up in 1965 under the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965 enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. The University has around 200 affiliated and permitted colleges and institutes to achieve its goal of dissemination of knowledge and generation of human resource.
