KISS Forging Ahead to Achieve Millennium Development Goals

KISS has been successfully responding to the Millennium Development Goals by trying to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women and ensure environmental sustainability. Apart from these four important goals, KISS through its efforts is creating awareness in reducing child mortality and combating malaria, HIV/AIDS and other diseases among the tribal which constitute 25% of the population of the state and 8% of the country. In its own small way KISS is reaching out to the world through its global partnership with the goal for achieving development.

(1) Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger :

Several efforts of the government fall flat as the less literate tribal people are unable to avail those opportunities. In that direction KISS has taken a great lead in educating the tribal children so that the educated tribal children could take a leading role in generating demands for their needs, appraise those demands through proper way which could bridge the gaps between the rich and poor. Apart from that the nutritious food provision for the KISS students also curbs starvation and malnutrition among the tribal children.
To diversify a sizeable segment of tribal school students at the secondary stage to the world of work.
To link education with productivity, economic development and   individual prosperity.
To meet the skilled and middle level manpower needs of the growing sectors of the economy in both organized and unorganized sector.

Students hone their skills by vocational activities

Ensuring livelihood: KISS provides value based education that instills the spirit of giving value to physical labour. The dignity of labour has its true expression in KISS through the concept of ‘Earn while you Learn’. It trains each of the students in some vocational skill or the other. The products made through these vocational activities are marketed and the profits earned from the sale of these products are given to the students involved in making of the products. Children send the money back to their families adding to their source of income. This lays the foundation of future employment/self employment of the student and their community.

Strengthening vocational skills of adolescents: As per the level of knowledge and interest the students are imparted with different vocational education. It helps them in finding alternative livelihood opportunity. This would make them self employed, build their capacity to prove their ability in competitive market. This has been a knowledge sharing initiative for the tribal students. KISS has been providing training on tailoring, food processing, security services, driving and medical attendant etcetera. The main aim of the vocational training programme is –

A playful leap towards learning

KISS provides a playful and interesting learning atmosphere for all the students. It has created inclination of all students (especially primary students) towards education. The absence of corporal punishment and incorporation of innovative pedagogy has ensured the cent percent retention in school and colleges. The style of education in KISS strengthens the indigenous knowledge of the tribal children, preserving the tribal values. Simultaneously it blends their knowledge by making them acquainted with the present technological innovations.

Ensuring education of tribal girls: One of the major problems in tribal areas is the poor enrolment and retention of girl children. The girl children have been deprived of their right to education due to the apathy of the parents, teachers and the cultural practice. In tribal communities the girls are engaged in household works and take care of their younger siblings in the absence of their parents which creates obstacle for their education. Further the distance of the school from their home has been one of the reasons of girl child dropout. KISS encourages girl education through its innovative teaching methods. This converts these girls from being ‘liabilities’ in to ‘assets’ and be the change agents for their respective communities.

(3) Promoting gender equality and women empowerment:

The male chauvinism has been an impediment for the growth of tribal women so far. In order to overcome those hurdles KISS has started empowering the girl students through education. Various platforms are given for flourishing their potencies and talent. The girl students of KISS are actively participating in curricular and extracurricular activities. They have developed their communication skills, take part in decision making activities, exhibited their thoughts and potencies in national and international arenas. In long run they would be the future leaders of their localities.

(4) Reducing child mortality :

Promoting hand washing practice among youngsters

Due to unhygienic practices very often children become the prey of fatal communicable diseases. Promotion of hygienic health habits like hand washing, nail cutting, purgation ensures health of the children in KISS. With the support of Peer Educators such activities are promoted in the institution. The trained peer educators have developed their action plan for improving health and hygiene, peer counseling. The   peer educators have successfully organized awareness session on preventive aspects of swine flu and promoted health and hygienic practices among the peers. The good practices like hand washing, cleaning of utensils; nail cutting, hair cutting and cleaning the dress etc are promoted by the peer educators successfully. Apart from that the students are made aware about personal hygiene through role plays, puppet shows and other cultural mediums. The hygienic health practices in the institution have reduced the child mortality.

Improved maternal health:

The adolescent girls are the future mothers hence special care is provided for their mental and physical health.  Girls receive individual counseling for their health issues. There is a counseling room for girls that has been made more user-friendly with the addition of posters and reading materials. The health counseling for girls in KISS dispensary has been strengthened with the joining of one full time lady gynecologist, who has been counseling students on healthy and hygienic practices. She is providing service to the girl students on gynecologic disorders. On the basis of questions received from the question box steps are being taken for providing counseling services to respective girl students. The peer educators are also engaged for the identification of girl students having problems and on the basis of peer recommendation specialized counseling services are being provided. Girls are encouraged to use low cost community sanitary napkin for curbing reproductive tract infection. In long run it would be very helpful for the reducing the maternal mortality rate.

Promoting Awareness Among Adolescent Girls

Under the LSE and ARSH project, KISS promotes awareness amongst girl students on reproductive health that enriches the knowledge and skills of adolescent girls, who would be the future mothers. LSE and ARSH make the students aware regarding the combat of HIV/AIDS. The children are made aware about how to combat malaria and other diseases which affect 25% of the population of the state.

Sensitizing students for the preservation of climate:

Since time immemorial the tribal population depends on the forest resources for their livelihood, but the gradual shrinking of forest resources due to over exploitation of the industries have brought their livelihood at stake. KISS has been sensitizing the tribal students regarding the conservation and protection of forest in order to curb climate change as well as providing them alternative source of livelihood. It makes the students aware by observing different red letter days for the protection and preservation of the forest. In KISS each child has adopted a tree. The tree bears the name of the child and the child takes care of the tree with a great deal of love and care. The tribal child establishes the bond faster because of his roots in the forested tribal land.
